Goes back in to 4th gear climbing hills over 100kms

I'm thiNking of buying a 1998 ford explorer limited but it has minor gear box issue it is 5 speed auto it goes back in to 4th gear when climbing hills over 100kms what could be the problem and bout how much would I be looking at to fix it the person that has it for sale said they have been driving it around with this problem for 6 months and that it hasn't got any worst

i would kind of think that it would be anormal situation. it's loading the vehicle down so it downshifts.

They said it only started doing this after the transmission had an oil change

still sounds normal to me but have a trans guy look at it get his opinion.
