1998 Ford Escort - P0104 code - mechanic said I need new valve & 2 other parts costing $350. After researching, found that valve may just need to cleaned with $6 carbon cleaner. How do I pick a mechanic that will not rip me off for this repair and make me buy something that I really don't need.

It is a MAF error. While it could be the sensor, I would use a MAF cleaner to clean the sensor, only $7 and many times the sensor gets debris on it that affects sensor output.

This should always be the first thing to do, MAF sensors are expensive and as I said many times cleaning will fix it.

Ask around about a mechanic, find an ASE certified tech. Some do work on the side.
