I have a 98 Ford Contour and my battery light came on randomly. What does that mean?

My battery light came on, and then turned off and never came back on.

Voltage may have spiked from alternator or comnnection may have been interrupted or belt may have slipped.

Great thanks. I notice a squeaking when I start my car and then it stops within seconds. I'm thinking it's a belt issue
