What you described is typical of internal leakage within the master cylinder. The clue is you won't lose brake fluid. Master cylinders can be rebuilt, but the kits usually cost more than just buying a professionally-rebuilt master cylinder with a warranty.

If you ARE losing brake fluid, the first suspect is a rusted steel line under the cab on the driver's side.
