i have a 1998 dodge ram pickup, this weekend while backing up, i heard what sounds like aluminum crunching (like i backed over something). i didn't run over anything, but now my reverse doesn't work. i have forward gears, but no reverse. it is the original transmission, over 245k miles on it. any thoughts??

I would suspect the sound you have heard to be what might be the result of an internal issue. An inspection of the fluid level and condition is next on the list. Do that and see what you come up with. If there is contamination and/or bits of metal, you may need to seek out a transmission professional to cure the problem, or perhaps consider replacement from a salvage vehicle.
