transmission will not engage

When I put it into reverse it won't go and when you shift it to drive it won't drive at all.but when you put it into second and first gear it will drive but not long distance. what should I do or what would be the problem I'm having? thanks

Have you checked the fluid? Low fluid level will cause this.

Have you changed the fluid and filter? A clogged filter will cause this as well.

Beyond that, it could be a valve body issue or something internal in the transmission.

I would start by changing the fluid and filter.
