4x4 dash lights work, trans. Case engages, front drive-shaft locks in, actuator extends, opened axle tube, shift fork good. Free wheels when front end jacked up. No lock up.

If both axles are driven by the front diff, then the hubs are the last to make the wheels turn. When was the last time you serviced them?

150k ago. I would say they are due. However, no vertical wiggle, nor movement in cv boots. Or noise on rotation.
If front end raised and all is confirmed locked in, wouldn't spinning pass. Side wheel, cause drivers side, as well as drive-shaft to turn. & Vice- versa?

Also, found a 1mm. Chunk of metal. Appears to have worked its way through from diff, as shaft end protruding through axle disconnect housing appears pristine. Unable to service diff now, as is my only ride & am 30 mins. To town for parts. Would you suspect a common failure point re: front diff? Trucks operates fine otherwise. No noticeable binding or clunking in front end.

If one wheel is not locked and it is an open rear, the 4 whell will not owrk

as far as the chunk, that is never good. You may want to open the cover and inspect the front diff for damage

Will pull those hubs tomorrow & inspect properly, diff. Will have to wait. As there seems to be no imminent prob. Other than 4x4.
So if read you right. If a front wheel hub is sheared, or? This would be a cause of no lock up. Sounds likely. Thanx for your patience, appreciate it was your immediate suggestion. Will get back to you!
