1998 Chevrolet Blazer Excessive heat from exhuast

When my blazer is idling in park you can't even stand along side of it because the heat coming from under the vehicle is hot. If I put my hand over the exhaust tail pipe I have immediately pull my hand away because it is to hot for my hand. Can someone please give me some guidance or direction as to what might be the problem. I was thinking something plugged in the exhaust, but was hoping someone could tell me how to narrow it down from either the block, egr, ports or the converter. Thank for any help.

If the engine is running too lean or if the ignition timing is too far retarded, it might cause the engine to run hot and transfer that heat to the exhaust. If the engine isn't running too hot, then the problem is most likely a bad catalytic convertor.

a converter runs at approximately 1200-1300 degrees without pulling a load like a trailer. scan for codes and check fuel pressure if that is ok then check vacuum at idle at manifold If 15" or below the suspect a plugged exhaust other than that don't worry about it.
