gas smell when running heat?

An overpowering gas smell fills the passenger area of the car when the heat is running. It dose not do this when the A/C is running, only when the heat is used. The gas smell is not present any other time. What could be causing this?

you have an external fuel leak that needs to be fixed now. get it checked asap before you have a fire.
