I have the a4 2.8 Quattro automatic. Driving through the rain one night & reverse stopped engaging. All other gears work great. I've read online that its a common problem. Could it be a gear relay, sensor, or solenoid? I don't want to take out the transmission if I don't have to.

First step would be to scan the gearbox module for any faults. This will start the diagnosis in the right direction.
