The vehicle emits very black offensive odour like rotten eggs. It makes it consume a lot of petrol. Coupled with irregular steaming. It goes up & down, then off for me to recranck. Although there is one indicator at the instrument cluster being displayed by the vehicle computer as (In 02-service). Please what do I do to get rid of fault. (2) The smoking stops a little if I unplug the airflow metre wire leading to the air cleaner box. But still consume more.(3) The gear refuses to engage once the engine is running. Except I press the gear knob lever before cranking the engine & engage for it to move.

Have you scanned the computer for trouble codes? If so, what code (s) did you get? The black smoke tells me it is running really rich (too much fuel). An O2 sensor can cause it, but the rotten egg smell leads me to believe there may be a problem with the catalytic converter. I guess the converter smell can be the result of raw fuel getting into the converter. Check this for me. After driving the vehicle, leave it running with the parking brake on and in park. Check to see if the catalytic converter is red hot.

Let me know what you find.

I have been driving the vehicle and it moves very fine and fast with the the gear responding well as the vehicle moves. I then, stopped as you said, placed it in a parking position with the hand breaks on. But the catalytic converter pot isn't red hot neither did turn red in the process. Thanks.

Sorry, just saw 2.8 in the subject. D'oh.

Check the vacuum hose at the fuel pressure regulator for wetness.

Scan the ECM for stored codes.

Am still waiting to know how I can avert this problem since my sharan mini-van emission is deteriorating by the day. The vehicle is saying that, there's no data stored in the vehicle's computer for me to know more of its problems.I can't use the vehicle for now because it consumes more of the petrol than before with serious foul smell that turns ones belly. Please how do I stop this problem?

This vehicle has refused to start when u cranked. It'll want to start but eventually, wouldn't. I diagnosed P.O-404 as an unknown pending trouble code. While the MIL Light is ON.
