I just purchased a 97 jetta that wasn't maintained very well. After repairing many of the issues, the only problem I have left is a poorly shifting transmission. It seems to shift from first to third to fifth gear while driving. Someone mentioned that the transmission needs reprogrammed. What are your thoughts and how do I fix it?

Correct fluid level, correct TCM coding and performing TCM Basic Settings. Can correct shifting issues.
A scan tool such as VCDS (VAG-COM) is needed to perform the above.
