I'm looking at buying a 97 VW golf trek 2.0 5 speed. I'm going to need a transmission but not sure what trans codes are the appropriate ones. I was told the ECH and DFQ are interchangeable but are there any others that will work? Is there anything I should be looking for specifically when purchasing another transmission for this vehicle?

Hello,

The best course of action would be to call your local dealer and provide them with the VIN for your car. They will be able to tell you what is the correct number for the transmission that will be compatible for your vehicle.
Keep in mind that if the transmission is not a match it will have issues working with rest of the vehicle's components.

I have attached the transmission identifying markings/procedure as well and replacement instructions.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
