When is the alxe oil changed or topped?

Whenever I do a tyre service the mech also tops my axle oil. Is this right? 'Cos he once changed it. How do I know the axle oil is due for a change? What grade's best for the axle oil change?

If you're referring to the differential gear lube, that is only changed when the fluid is drained for other repairs. If anyone is adding, that means there is a leak that must be located and repaired.
