1997 Toyota Avalon. Replaced left side axle. Transmission fluid had all leaked out. Refilled tranny. No problems now in forward gears but, reverse seems to be locked up and neutral is now a forward gear. I would appreciate any ideas.

The loss of transmission fluid seems to have caused damage to the transmission. One of the clutches is not working to specification resulting in one forward gear being engaged all the time. When shifted to reverse, the 2 gears are fighting each other resulting in vehicle not being able to move.

A rebuilt or transsmission replacement is in order.

The strange thing is that reverse was working even with the lack of fluid and after filling. This is spontaneous.

Transmission can fail anytime or works intermittently until a leak in pressure internally causes the transmission to go haywire.

A dignostic by qualified personnels would be recommended prior to proceeding with repairs.
