Heavy and Sudden Transmission leak

catastrophic transmission leak from 4Runner 1997, SR5 V6, Auto. Occured whilst driving on motor way, whilst vehicle in 4WD (Hi), sudden heavy smoke. Car still drives, changes gears etc. Can see massive leak under vehicle, any ideas what has occured? Differntial? Gearbox?

Wash down and run with the level full watch around the transmission for the leak, you will see it if it is a bad as you report, describe the part of the transmission that the leak is coming from.
