My check engine light will go on and then stay off for a while

My 97 Subaru legacy SW has an intermittent stalling the engine has 168800 miles runs well and no determinable problems

Check engine light on maybe due to a lot of things
and the best is to have it scanned for codes
most part store and local shops will scan it for free
need an OBDII reader
