Fuel pump problem?

have a 97 saturn SL2. changed fuel pump and filter. About every 2 or 3 days my car will die when i fire it back up. it blows a big puff of smoke and smells like raw fuel then it will run fine. there have been no codes. the mechanic can not get the car to act up any suggestions

Just to add to this one that sounds like a bad coolant temp sensor very common for them to fail on that car.There cheap also inspect the inside of the connector going to it if the terminals are blue or green instead of silver you will have to replace the connector also.
