1997 Saturn Sl2 After Installing New Starter Two Things Happened First Lost

After installing a new starter, two things happened: First I lost my speedometer, Second it cut out at high RPM's in lower gears. Today the speedometer came back on for about 5 minutes and the car seems to run fine.
How do I get my speedometer back? Did I disconect something by the starter?

The speed sensor is close to the start i woulod start by checking the wiring and sensor.Its right where the axle goes into into transmission.
