Steering wheel locked up and I started to lose power

I have a 1997 ponitac grand prix 3.8 v6 engine and I've been having a problem with it. The other day I was driving it and the steering wheel locked up and I started to lose power so I took it to auto zone to get it looked at because my check engine light went on but no codes?

My engine light comes on when my car loses power and the steering locks up?

It sounds like you have an alternator going out. Also when you say the steering locks is the engine shut off at this time?

I am not sure what the code is and it will let me brake and everything to slow down but it will not press on the gas and the battery light, check engine light, and my oil pan light will all come on at the same time.

When the engine shuts off all the lights on the dash will come on and you will lose power steering because the engine shut off. You need to see if the alternator is working.
