My 1997 Nissan Micra has a gearbox whine. We were told it's a cv that needs replacing. It's finally got to the stage where it sounds really bad and we no longer want to drive it. Do gearbox's have cv's as this is unheard of to me. Any help is appreciated.

You sure its not the throwout bearing that's making the whining noise

'gear whine' is caused by mesh misalignment or poorly machined/matched gears. low fluid can contribute to noise. worn trans shaft bearings can cause misalignment internally. 175k is a lot of miles and could account for worn parts/noise.
