1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse M Driving Down Road Steady S Running Fine Get On Petal

When I'm driving down the road steady it's running fine but when I get on the petal it will backfire for about 4 seconds before it stats to accelerate and I was just wondering what the cause of this problem is.
