After driving a short distance the fuel tank build up a lot of pressure. A lot more than it should have. The check engine light doesn't come on.

There is probably a valve in the gas tank for the evap system. Something may be clogged-up, can't release fumes.

Your fill cap should release pressure, after around 1.8 psi pressure in tank. Could be a faulty cap. Under normal conditions, the cap lets air in, so a vaccum isn't created in the tank.

Yep! Something clogged up alright! Just a matter of WHAT it is.
I replaced the gas cap a year ago on the advice of another forum, but the problem continues to this day. There must be more than 1.8 psi buildup to cause that much pressure. I will be checking the vapor canister check valve this evening to see how that fits into this problem. This problem started about 2 years ago, or so. First I thought it was a leaking fuel rail until I discovered the fumes were actually coming from the gas filler tube area. Thank you for your response!

There is also a valve in the gas tank that vents pressure to the outside atmosphere, According to our database, mitchell. I can't see anything from here, I can only make suggestions.

JDL,

I've been looking thru mit i, ever since this one surfaced. My buddy's buddy is having the same issue. I half heartedly looked it over, when I was sorta in a hurry. And I kinda forgot about it, months ago!

Then I started watching this one thinking ya'll would come up with the fix.

I didn't want to jump in, but I did look thru mit i, confusing as it is, I found a "rollover check valve" on the tank, and I grabbed a diagram. It could be stuck, "checked"?

On my jeep, air can pass both directions.I'm guessing, it only checks, when upside down.I haven't tried that theory out yet!

I looked for emissions diagrams, but found none

Over and over, as I "got lost", I found these in the writing."Evap canister purge". And."Evap canister vent solenoid", I could find nothing about location, except for "engine performance"

Of the 3 engine performance diagrams, which I looked over 3 times each, on my 32" tv/ computer monitor, I could not find either.I reckon the closest thing was "egr". Maybe it's s. Ucking the vapors thru it?

You know i'm a jeep cj feller, I have a roll-over check and a liquid check in "mr. Jeep", my '77 cj 5. When I 1st got him, I could not get him to take fuel (found out that that year has a tight 90, as it enters, and holding the fuel nozzle upside down, is the best I can do!).

Anyway.I thought at 1st, that the vent was the problem.

So I took it loose at the canister, on my jeep, and other rigs i've seen, it's a small (3/8"?) Line the same color as a garden hose.(This next part is not recommended, may be what's wrong with me!) I blew thru the line. Ez! All clear. Then I s. Ucked thru it. All clear. But not good.I also blew it with an air compressor.A vacuum pump/ gun should been used, for the reverse!. Shop vac did enter my mind, then I thought of the sparkage factor!

Just throwing out a test, from tank to canister. Be safe! Eliminate that far, if you can. You might look for crimped or twisted lines 1st, before you go to the trouble of taking it loose.

You might look around the canister for the "mystery solenoids", I have no clue whether they exist, or if they are "electric or vacuum operated"

Maybe you know mit i, a lot better than me.

Good luck, post good news, so i'll be able to help the feller here!

See #16, on the diagram

Yeah,

Albert Einstein was misunderstood at times also.

He and the Medic would have been able to logically discuss the theory of relevancy of only special people possessing Jeeps.

His unkempt hair was due to riding in a Jeep with the windshield down. Very much similar to the hat-less woman riding in the back of this one below.

(windshield down, is a proven way to troll for chicks!)

As far as this thread was going back in 2011, it appears that no one came up with a positive conclusion.

Feel free to post a new question to help with your vehicle. We now have better references and fresh new help.
