MY 1997 MERCURY TRACER WILL NOT CRANK WITH MY KEY,BUT WHEN I GET A BOOST MY ENGINE TURNS OVER EVEV THOUGH THE KEY IS NOT IN THE SWITCH

The black wire with red tracer at the starter assembly, take it loose, but, don't let it touch metal. If the starter will still crank with jumper, I think something is wrong with starter assembly. You shouldn't have to use a jumper if battery has a full charge.

Just to add, yes, there could be a problem with ignition switch or wiring circuit?
