when supporting the engine on a 97 protege while removing the engine mount, where do i place the jack?

Use block of wood and position on front of oil pan

Thanks I will do that, I was just worried the weight would cause damage somewhere under there.

No it can hold engine weight just don,t jack too much as to raise car off jackstands
