how do you release the fuel line pressure on a 97 lincoln towncar to replace the fuel filter?

You can disconnect the inertia switch, then try to start the vehicle. Also, a fuel pressure gage should have pressure release button.

You can also just depress the shraeder valve at the test port on the fuel rail.
