The battery gauge on the instrument panel goes all the way to the highest reading when the car is started and when driven ( which is 17 ). It has a brand new battery and the alternator has been tested and shows it to be in good working condition. The car starts immediately and drives well. What could be causing this problem? Is it safe to drive?

you may have an internal regulator problem with alternator or you r battery may be sulfated. Have it checked tomake sure it'snot just a gauge problem.
