I changed the water pump a while back and checked timing belt at the same time. It was ok, and tension was in line with instructions, but now flapping against side of timing cover. Seems plenty of tension when engine is stopped. Likely worn belt? Of some other problem?

Will do, belt looks ok, no cracks or fraying but teeth don't seem to fit snugly in pulleys.

Timing belt weaknesses are rarely visible. They need to be changed automatically at regular intervals which is every 60,000 miles. A timing belt failure on this engine usually equals a total engine failure with multiple bent valves.
