The temp gauge spikes

When idling the temp gauge spikes to almost max the goes down to low when driving. Could this be the Thermostat?

IT IS POSSIBLE

I'D PUT MORE FAITH IN THE COOLING FAN IS NOT CYCLING ON TO COOL THE RADIATOR.

BAD MOTOR--RELAY BAD---FUSE--ETC

WHEN YOU ARE MOVING AIR DOES FLOW OVER THE RADIATOR FINS---SITTING STILL...NOTHING
