Groaning/Grinding Noise in read end

I have a 97 T-Bird that makes a groaning or grinding sound in the left rear wheel as I begin to accelerate. When I am just leaving I rarely hear anything. But once I have run for 10 or 15 minutes I hear the noise both as I slow to a stop and as I accelerate. The noise is from a back and forth movement, bot up and down. (If I push down on the trunk there is no noise.) What is the problem?

will it do it if you jack up that wheel and listen? you may be able to rent a chassis ear mic system from auto parts store to isolate problem. could just be wheel bearings. doe sit have disc rear brakes?

I haven't jacked it up and listened yet, I hadn't thought of that. It does have rear disc brakes.

also check wheel to see if it is hotter than other side. maybe brakes are sticking and see if shoes pads are ok. and inspect that hub assembly for any abnormalities debris/damage.
