I have a 97 ford taurus today it died while I was driving today I had to pull on the side of the road and get a tow truck to bring it back home I was told it was a bad battery and the alternator I got a new battery but now it still will not turn over but also the negative cable gets hot while trying to turn over no crank or anything but should it start with new battery or would the starter stop from getting a charge

Start by measuring the battery voltage with an inexpensive digital voltmeter so we know what we're starting with. If you find leas than around 12.5 to 12.6 volts, charge the battery at a slow rate for an hour. If the voltage is low, indicating it is discharged, the starter will turn very slowly if at all. That causes it draw very high current which could be why the cable is getting hot. Check the ends of the cables too including under the insulation. Corrosion on Ford battery and starter cables is very common but it's more likely to occur right at the starter.
