heater is blowing outside air only

i can smell the engine blowing in the vents when the heater is on but the air is whatever the temperature is outside

The cable for the fresh air vent box door has probably come loose. Look at the right side under the dash and the box above the blower motor all the way right will have a cable that opens and closes the door. This chooses between fresh air and re-circulated air.
