1997 ford explorer will only drive in 4wd. When trying to switch it over to 2wd it will move about 5 feet b4 it makes a noise like the gear slipped. Would this be the transmision or the transfer case? And also while driving in 4wd the front differential smells like it is burning and it is hard to stear the truck.

Have you checked the fluid levels in all the boxes? Sounds to me like you have front-end problems, are you running different size tires on that vehicle? Or new ones on the front and old ones on the rear or vice versa?

Well While The Trans Was Messed Up I Had A Flat And Was Drving Around For Like A Day On A Spare Tire In The Front. So Is That Why The Front Differtial Smells Like Its Burning and when I drive it, it sounds like something is griding liek the differential. So the front end had nothing to do with possiblty the transfer case problem?
