knocking noise when starting

97 ford explorer knocking noise when starting then goes away when running started to hear it when it got cold outside

Wouldn't I hear knocking as its running if it was that

you can if you rev the engine just right but dont over do it.and it has to be fully warm.hold at high idle and about 2000 rpm's then take up to 3000 and let off. listen for the rattle.

Check that the oil filter is a quality unit with an anti drain back valve fitted, replace if not and re check.
