i have 97 ford exployer while i am driving the 4wd lights flash off and on also when i turn the wheels it pops and cracks it acts like it wants to go into 4wdrive

it is indicating a fault in the 4 wheel system. you need a shop with a scan tool to bring up the code for the area of failure
