i drive a 1997 dodge 1500 with the 318 and the GEN light came on, i checked the alternator and it passed two weeks ago now it came on again and drained my battery and now im stranded

Worn brushes are fairly common and that causes intermittent loss of charging. Even though the alternator tested okay at one point, it can still be failing at other times. Diagnosing the system is real easy if you measure the voltages on the two small wires on the back of the alternator while the engine is running and the warning light is on or the gauge is reading lower than normal.
