Enter yourI have a 97 Dakota truck (3.9 L). Experiencing intermittent diagnostic scanning problem with OBD II. The scanner is good (tested it on other cars). I am getting a link error (communication breakdown I think) when I try to run a scan. I have been able to get a scan thru a couple months ago, but since then no go. I suspect my connector port / wiring could be a problem area.

Can you assist me in verifying my problem please.

Also, of late the truck is now running rough, feels like it wants to stall out. I checked air and fuel filters. Fuel injectors have been cleaned a few months back. What else might I check and / or rule out?

Steve question.

The diagnostic link is a fused circuit, so check that first.

Next check the wires to link, make sure they are not loose/kinked/shorted/open.

Check the fuse. When the fuse blows, the ALDL connector won't hook up with the scanner.

As for you driveability problem, always check ignition first, then fuel, then sensors.

Check plugs/wires/coils for misfiring cylinder.

And cleaning your injectors don't work. It only cost you money. In fact, manufactures advise against this because the deposits build up over time, and if you have the injectors cleaned, they often begin to leak.

This could very well be your problem. If your injectors are leaking, you'll get the problem you're describing.

Also, check the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum hose and check for the presence of gas. If you find/feel/smell any, replace it.
