shift cable to change the gears correctly

i have 97 Chevy Tahoe just replaced the trans ,shift cable neutral safety switch and steering column and i can not get the new shift cable to change the gears correctly now Tahoe in shop and they are playing guessing games can u help

that is a two piece assmebly and alot of times there is a little piece that falls out that lets the two lock together. it is on the cable coming from the inside of truck. check with a dealer they may be able to get it for you. without it it won't line up right or shift right.
