I have a 1997 Chevy Lumina and don't know what to do.

I have heard a popping noise when turning left or right. I was told by a local repair shop that I would need a "shaft" for both sides at $800 each not including labor of course. A friend said it is the cv axle which should be less expensive and if I don't replace it then the car could stop being driveable. Please help.

They are 89 per side and 3 hours to replace. Add an alignment for 79.
Find a new shop.

Thanks for your answer. What exactly is a shaft and does it sound like that is what I need? The shop was telling me it is a combination of 2 parts.

Yep, it is an axle shaft with an inner and out cv joint. You replace the entire shaft, very common.
Go to another shop. They are way out of line with pricing
