why does it sound like an airplane taking off?

started about 5days ago, from 20mph on up the whirr increases in pitch. at idle no sound. checked tires; rotated tires; no play in wheel bearings noted. any ideas?

The wheel bearings can be noisey and ging bad without any play.They only get loose when they get really bad.Do you have a floor jack and jack stands?
