I have a tcm problem

I have a 1997 BMW Z3 with a tcm problem can I buy a used TCM and install it or do I have to go to the dealer and buy a new one?I was told the TCM's were VIN specific and could not be swapped out.

thats correct. new only and has to be flashed. i would be very sure before you do this operation. it is not a common failure for this piece.
