my 1997 BMW m3 is idling low and very rough (around 500rpm) it seems to drive fine but sometimes dies while idling...I took it into a mechanic and got a "mass air flow" error... any suggestions on what that could mean and how to fix it?

If it isn't the actual MAF, (Mass Air Flow), sensor, it can be checked at certain engine speeds for certain voltages within set parameters, then I would be looking for vacuum leaks around the inlet manifold and associated plumbing/fittings. If it is the MAF, I have had great success rates, (over 80%), from simply cleaning the Sensor plate/wire with White Spirit, (100% hydrocarbon), and a careful compressed air delivery in the same direction as engine airflow.
