You would need to have the transmission control module scanned for codes. That will be your starting point and go from there.

The only place would need to be a Volvo dealership. There is no other way of retrieving the codes that I know of?

Ok I found a way.I leave the car in D auto while the car is off then I click the ignition key from off to on until the light stops flashing and then I leave it for about 15 to 30 minutes. So when I'm ready to drive away esp in the mornings on my way to work then without turning the key off I move the auot gear from D to N then start and the light does nit come on but the******** remains. I'll see how it goes today then let you know. I have another question please. The dial in the fron that shows you readings of mpg, engine temp, oil temp, range also has an ext temp place but it is stuck t -40 degrees and even when I try to press the reset button I have noticed that since I bought the car the ext temp has never shown me any other reading and is always showing me the -40 degrees. Can you help with this? Thanks.

The outside temp sensor is most likely bad. there may be 2 of them and they are attached on the bottom radiator splash guard.
