My son has a 96 toyota tercel. Apparently at lunch he went out to get lunch. The car was shaking and the check engine light was flashing. Any ideas what might be the problem?

That indicates a severe misfire. Have the codes read from the computer and that will identify which cylinders are missing so you can do further testing to determine the cause.
