1996 Toyota Avalon Drivers Door Will Open Because Mechanism That Holds Shut

My drivers door will not open because the mechanism that holds the door shut is broken. Any ideas or suggestion as to how I can solve this problem?

You will probably have to remove the drivers seat and remove the door trim, not easy from inside the car with the door stuck, but i doubt that you will get the trim off any other way.
