1996 Pontiac Sunfire Rough runningrefuses to accelerate

Just bought this car, starts easy, runs rough, won't rev up. Replaced spark plugs and wires, old plugs were black, carbon fouled. Vehicle won't rev over 2500 rpm, bogs down bad when trying to drive. Has 5 speed standard transmission. I'm 62 and disabled, had to junk my old car and bought this nightmare, never liked GM products, now I know why. Can't afford to spend a fortune on it. Was told it sounded like a bad throtle position sensor. Can you please help me?

Will engine rev up while in park? When driving does exhaust sound loud?MIL light on?

It does not rev up in neutral, (5 speed standard transmission), exhaust not loud and no light on. Engine does seem loud, exhaust kind of sound.

Turned out to be a bad timing chain tensioner. Cam was off 3 teeth. Replaced timing gears chain and tensioner. Runs good now.
