i have a 1996 pontiac firebird formula with the 5.7 ltr lt1. when i start the car it will idle but when u push the gas it will backfire and die what is the problem

There could be a number of things wrong. Is the check engine light on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Have you checked the catalytic converter to make sure it isn't plugged?
