Why did my negative battery post melt and why will my car not get any power now?

My 96 firebird completely died when leaving work yesterday. I opened the hood and found the negative battery post melted (side post battery). Now there is no power to my car at all even with a jump box attached to the lead wires. I am at a loss as to what caused this can you help me diagnose this issue please?

I would look at the battery leaking acid, overcharging of the alt or a bad cable.
Regardless, replace the battery and the cable to start.
