1996 Nissan Sentra Just Replaced Alternator On Test Drive Would Couple Miles

We just replaced the alternator then on the test drive it would be ok for a couple of miles then it started hopping and didn't want to accelerate. we stopped and turned the car off then it would be ok for a few more miles. WHAT IS GOING ON ???
