License Plate Light Replacement

How do you replace license plate lights for a 1996 Mitsubishi Montero SD? I found two screws on each lamp and can wiggle them out. But, it appears to be one piece and I need to drive at night and was warned by police about lack of light on rear plate.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
